How the grade band is calculated, with cutoffs
Class-rank grading is a relative system that assigns a band from the cumulative percentile of your rank in each subject. The cumulative percentile is computed as:

For example, ranking 10th out of 200 gives a cumulative percentile of 5%, which is band 2 in the 9-tier system (within 11%). Under the 5-tier system that applies from 2025 first-years, the same 5% would be band 1 (within 10%). Be sure to pick the system that matches your year. How is the grade band assigned?
In the 9-tier relative grading system, your band comes from the cumulative percentile of your rank. The top 4% is band 1, up to 11% is band 2, 23% is band 3, 40% is band 4, 60% is band 5, 77% is band 6, 89% is band 7, 96% is band 8, and below that is band 9.
How is the cumulative percentile calculated?
Cumulative percentile = (your rank ÷ total students) × 100. For example, ranking 10th out of 200 gives 10 ÷ 200 × 100 = 5%, which is within 11%, so it falls in band 2.
How are tied ranks handled?
Real schools may handle ties differently (grouping students at the same rank). This calculator uses the rank you enter as-is, so when there are many ties the result can differ from your school's official figure.
What is the 5-tier system?
Starting in 2025 (first-year cohort, 2028 admissions), grading shifts to a 5-tier relative system: band 1 is 10%, band 2 is 34%, band 3 is 66%, band 4 is 90% and band 5 is 100% cumulative. Existing cohorts keep the 9-tier system, so choose the system that matches your year.
